In May 2026, Anthropic announced that financial services firms including Citadel are using Claude to build and automate financial workflows. They released 10 pre-built agent templates for the finance industry. Here's what that means — and what it means for people managing their own money today.

What Anthropic announced

The announcement included: Claude running across Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook via native add-ins (so financial analysts can use Claude from within the tools they already use). Ten agent templates designed specifically for financial services: pitch deck builder, earnings report reviewer, KYC (know your customer) screener, month-end close assistant, portfolio summarizer, and others. Citadel is using Claude to build and update financial models. The capability is enterprise-grade — but the same Claude is available to anyone.

What this means for regular people (not Wall Street)

The tools built for hedge funds don't stay there. The same capability Citadel is using to analyze earnings reports is available in a standard Claude Pro subscription today. The difference is the Bloomberg terminal and proprietary data — not the AI itself.

Here's what Claude can do right now that overlaps with professional financial analysis:

Read and interpret earnings reports

Public companies release quarterly earnings reports (10-Qs) and annual reports (10-Ks) on the SEC's EDGAR database. These are dense, jargon-heavy documents. Paste any section into Claude and ask it to extract the key metrics, flag risk factors, compare to the previous quarter, and explain what the numbers actually mean. This used to require a finance degree. Now it takes 10 minutes.

Research ETFs and mutual funds

Ask Claude to analyze an ETF's holdings, expense ratio, historical performance vs. its benchmark, sector concentration, and how it fits in a diversified portfolio. With web search enabled, Claude can pull current data. Without it, it can still reason through the structure and logic of any fund you describe.

Stress test a personal portfolio

Describe your holdings (or paste a list) and ask Claude what happens in different market scenarios: 2020-style crash, rising interest rate environment, sector-specific downturn. This is a conceptual exercise, not a prediction — but thinking through scenarios before they happen is exactly what institutional investors do.

Build financial models and spreadsheets

Claude can build DCF (discounted cash flow) models, budget templates, net worth trackers, and loan amortization tables. Describe what you need and it generates the formulas, explains the assumptions, and can export to a format you can paste into Excel or Google Sheets.

Earnings report analysis
I'm going to paste a section from [Company]'s quarterly earnings report. Analyze it and tell me: (1) key financial metrics (revenue, earnings, margins) and how they compare to the prior quarter and prior year, (2) any significant changes in guidance or forward-looking statements, (3) specific risk factors mentioned that an investor should understand, (4) management's tone — are they confident or hedging? (5) your plain-English summary of what this quarter means for the company's trajectory. Here's the text: [paste]
Portfolio stress test
Here are my current investment holdings: [list holdings with approximate % of portfolio]. Walk me through how this portfolio would likely perform in each of these scenarios: (1) a 30% S&P 500 decline over 6 months, (2) rising interest rates environment (Fed raises rates 2% over 18 months), (3) a tech sector-specific correction (NASDAQ drops 40%), (4) high inflation for 2+ years. For each scenario, tell me which positions are most vulnerable, which are most resilient, and what a reasonable rebalancing response might be. Remind me this is educational analysis, not financial advice.
smobyday tip

The gap between what institutional investors do and what individual investors can do has narrowed dramatically. The data is public. The tools are accessible. What required a research team now requires a Claude Pro subscription and good prompts. The edge is in knowing what questions to ask.
