In May 2026, OpenAI launched a personal finance feature for ChatGPT Pro users in the US. You can now connect your bank accounts, credit cards, and investment accounts directly to ChatGPT via Plaid — and then ask it questions about your actual financial situation. Here's what that means and how to use it.
What it actually does
Once you connect your accounts, ChatGPT shows a Finances dashboard with: portfolio performance, spending by category, upcoming payments, subscription tracking, and your connected account balances. More importantly, it changes how you can interact with the AI. Instead of describing your finances hypothetically, you reference them directly: "@Finances, help me figure out where I can save more this month."
ChatGPT then analyzes your actual transaction data — not a hypothetical version of your budget — and gives advice based on what you're actually spending. The difference in advice quality is significant.
What ChatGPT can do with your financial data
Goal planning: "Based on my current savings rate, how long will it take to save $30,000 for a home down payment?" — and it can actually calculate this from your real income and spending data. Spending analysis: "Which category am I overspending in compared to last month?" With real transaction data, this is an actual analysis, not a guess. Subscription audit: "What recurring subscriptions am I paying for? Are there any I haven't used in the last 60 days?" This one alone can be worth connecting for. Scenario modeling: "If I cut dining by 30% and redirected it to savings, what would my savings rate be?"
How to set it up
Available to ChatGPT Pro users in the US (web and iOS). Look for the "Finances" tab in the ChatGPT left sidebar. Click "Get started" → connect via Plaid → select your financial institutions. Over 12,000 banks and financial institutions are supported. The setup takes about 5 minutes.
Once connected, you'll see the Finances dashboard update with your data. Use "@Finances" in any chat to reference your connected accounts in your questions.
Privacy: what you should know
ChatGPT cannot access full account numbers or card numbers. It cannot move money or execute transactions. Your data follows your existing ChatGPT data settings — if you've opted out of training data usage, your financial data follows that setting. You can disconnect accounts at any time from Settings → Connections. Data is deleted within 30 days of disconnecting.
The connection goes through Plaid, which is the same intermediary used by most major fintech apps (Venmo, Robinhood, Betterment, etc.). If you're comfortable with those apps accessing your banking data, the security model here is equivalent.
Current availability
Pro users only (as of mid-2026). US only. Web and iOS. Plus plan access is expected to follow. The feature was announced in May 2026 alongside other financial tools and is rolling out gradually.
The most useful thing about real financial data in AI: specificity. The difference between "I spend a lot on food" and "you spent $847 on dining in the last 30 days, which is 34% above your 6-month average" is the difference between a vague conversation and an actual action plan. Connect the accounts once and the quality of every money conversation you have with AI improves permanently.
