Most people use PTO like it's an emergency fund — one day here, one day there, burned on random Fridays. But PTO is a time asset, and like any asset, it compounds when you deploy it strategically.

The 2027 US federal holiday calendar gives you some unusually powerful windows. Juneteenth and the 4th of July are only 17 days apart — with both landing on a Friday and a Monday. Christmas and New Year's both fall on Saturdays, making their observed dates back-to-back Fridays. And Veterans Day is on a Thursday, meaning one single PTO day buys you a four-day weekend.

Here is every stack, the exact dates, and a 15-day masterplan that turns your standard PTO allowance into 31 consecutive days off.

Stack #1 — The Summer Double-Dip

June 18 – July 5, 2027  ·  10 PTO days → 18 days off

This is the best PTO opportunity in the entire 2027 calendar. Juneteenth is observed on Friday June 18. Independence Day is observed on Monday July 5. They are separated by exactly 17 days — with two weekends and two full work weeks in between. Take those work weeks off and you get an uninterrupted 18-day stretch.

Stack #2 — The Christmas / New Year's Double Friday

December 22 – December 31, 2027  ·  6 PTO days → 12 days off

Christmas Day falls on Saturday, so the observed holiday is Friday December 24. New Year's Day 2028 falls on Saturday, so it's observed on Friday December 31. Two Fridays. Both holidays. You only need to fill in the Wednesdays and Thursdays before each, plus the Mon-Thu in between, to get 12 unbroken days off for only 6 PTO days.

The Other Standard Monday Stacks

MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day all fall on Mondays. The formula is the same each time: take Tuesday through Friday (4 PTO days) to get a 9-day stretch. Or take the week before (5 PTO) to get 11 days.

MLK Day — Monday Jan 18
Take Jan 19–22 (Tue–Fri) 4 PTO → Jan 16–24 = 9 days off
4 PTO → 9 days
Presidents' Day — Monday Feb 15
Take Feb 16–19 (Tue–Fri) 4 PTO → Feb 13–21 = 9 days off
4 PTO → 9 days
Memorial Day — Monday May 31
Take Jun 1–4 (Tue–Fri) 4 PTO → May 29–Jun 6 = 9 days off
4 PTO → 9 days
Labor Day — Monday Sep 6
Take Sep 7–10 (Tue–Fri) 4 PTO → Sep 4–12 = 9 days off
4 PTO → 9 days
The 15-Day Masterplan

If you have 15 PTO days and want maximum time off, here is the allocation that gets you the most calendar days while keeping the stacks non-overlapping and the moves strategic:

Bonus: Free Holidays You Still Get

That's 8 more days off that cost you zero PTO.
smobyday tip

Submit your PTO requests for the Summer Double-Dip (June 21 – July 2) as early as January. That 10-day stretch in summer is the most obvious one and your colleagues have access to the same calendar. First to submit usually wins approval first.

Tips for Getting Your PTO Approved

Request early, not last minute. Popular windows like the week of July 4th fill up on shared team calendars fast. January is not too early to put in requests for June and July.

Frame it around the holiday, not the stack. "I'll be out around the 4th of July" lands softer than "I'm taking 10 days off in June/July." Both are true — but one anchors to a holiday everyone expects you to use.

Split across two managers if needed. If your company caps consecutive PTO, the Summer Double-Dip can be submitted as two separate 5-day requests — "the week of June 21" and "the week of June 28" — which often clears approval more easily than a single 10-day block.

Use a floating holiday if your company offers one. Many companies give 1–2 floating holidays per year. The best use in 2027 is on Wednesday December 22 or Thursday December 23 — turning the Christmas/New Year's holiday block into a true 12-day stretch without using PTO for those days.
